October 15, 2009

The subcommittees that were formed have been working on their specific initiatives. The subcommittees include:

  • IndianaMap Statewide Data Integration Plan Subcommittee
  • IndianaMap Viewer Development Subcommittee
  • Data Download and Streaming Web Service Subcommittee
  • IndianaMap Framework data development Subcommittee
  • GIS Inventory (NSGIC Ramona Inventory) Update and Maintenance Subcommittee

  • August 20, 2009

The newly formed IndianaMap Steering Committee met for the second time on June 25th in the State Library. Highlights of the meeting include:

  • Discussed charging for “premium” services on the IndianaMap. Some examples of premium services (ArcGIS Server WFS connections, Premium ArcGIS Server access, SDE Connection to the IndianaMap, mobile/iPhone IndianaMap Application). Pros and cons of charging and potential limitations in providing premium services were discussed. The committee agreed to table the discussion and revisit in at a future date, most likely after IGIC has finished the indianamap.org site, and after IGS has migrated the IndianaMap to ArcGIS Server.
  • Discussed the formation of subcommittees to help address the specific initiatives of the full committee. The subcommittees include:
  • IndianaMap Statewide Data Integration Plan (DIP) Subcommittee
  • IndianaMap Viewer Development Subcommittee
  • Data Download and Streaming Web Service Subcommittee
  • IndianaMap Framework Data Development Subcommittee
  • GIS Inventory (NSGIC Ramona Inventory) Update and Maintenance Subcommittee
  • Committee chairpersons were established and other interested participants volunteered.

    June 18, 2009

The newly-formed IndianaMap Steering Committee met for the first time on May 21st in the State Library. This was an Introduction and “Get to know you” meeting. Highlights of the meeting include:

  • Jim Sparks, GIO discussed the “IndianaMap and Indiana Code”
  • Open Records (APRA) vs. Indiana GIS Law. Jim wrote an inquiry to Indiana's Public Access Counselor to get opinion on these issues. The results of this can be found on www.igic.org website and the Indiana PAC site.
  • Jim's recommendations – 1) Continue to build relationships to share data and sidestep the copyright issue, 2) Work to invert The National Map funding paradigm to focus money at the local level to build out data, and filter up to State and Federal.
  • A presentation from Denver Harper and Chris Dintaman (IGS) about the IndianaMap Viewer.
  • A presentation from Stephanie Snider and Anna Radue (UITS) about the IndianaMap Spatial Data Portal p
  • Future of the IndianaMap
  • IndianaMap Upgrade to ArcGIS Server
  • Indiana Data Sharing Initiative Current Status
  • Sustained funding for the IndianaMap
  • April 16, 2009

To support and provide guidance for ongoing development of the IndianaMap portal and data store, IGIC's plan is to change the IndianaMap Committee to the IndianaMap Steering Committee. The Steering Committee will be made up of the chairs of the different IndianaMap workgroups as well as a cross section of IGIC Board members and other partner organizations. The focus will be to provide direction for the IndianaMap portal and the data distribution services that are currently provided through Indiana University and the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS). To date the Indiana Department of Transportation has been the biggest financial provider to the portal, along with University Information Technology Services at Indiana University.

At the April IGIC Board meeting, it was suggested that the committee also include representatives from the forest service, legislative services, utilities, engineers, economic development and a wide range of other possible resources. The Committee will be revising the plan and asking for input. The decision to refocus will be reviewed with a possible vote at the next IGIC Board meeting.

IGS is currently working on standing up a ArcGIS Server test environment for the IndianaMap portal. Once complete, the test server will allow IGS to start work on testing/porting/redesign of the current interactive ArcIMS online map.
