2010 Indiana State Fair

IGIC partnered with the Boy Scouts of America and the Indiana State Fair to offer a series of activities from August 6th to August 22nd. This was the first time IGIC has participated at the Fair, and we were treated to 17 sunny (and warm) days.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Scouting in the United States and in recognition of this important event the State Fair supported the construction of a permanent Boy Scout Bridge Legacy Project.

The Fairgrounds also established a permanent Scout Camp area directly adjacent to the new Boy Scout bridge. The IGIC tent was located in this new Scout Camp area.

The IGIC tent included displays ranging from how to read a map, how to use a compass, displays of both classic and new USGS topographic maps, “Where in Indiana?” and “Where in the World?” imagery games, and numerous samples of modern digital imagery captured from both satellite and airborne digital sensors.

There were almost 3,000 visitors to the IGIC tent over the course of the State Fair, with an average of 175 visitors per day. The tent was open for more than nine hours each day, and 67 different IGIC volunteers worked in the tent.

There were also a number of corporate and institutional sponsors and supporters for the event. Seven sponsors provided financial assistance, including:

  • 39 Degrees North
  • Butler, Fairman, & Seufert
  • Citizens Gas
  • Indiana 811
  • Kucera International
  • Sanborn
  • Woolpert

  • Sixteen supporters provided resources, supplies and give-aways for the tent, including:

  • GENI (Geography Educators Network of Indiana)
  • IMAGIS
  • Indiana Business Research Center

  • Indianapolis Power & Light
  • Lizardtech
  • Mapdiva
  • Saddlebrook Golf Course
  • Surdex Corporation

  • IGIC offers its grateful thanks and appreciation to all the volunteers, sponsors and supporters who were all critically important in making IGIC’s participation in this event possible!
