IGIC members will be available to teach Scouts many of the requirements for the Orienteering and Geology merit badges. For the Orienteering merit badge Scouts will be able to work on requirements 2, 3, 4, and 5. These involve learning the features of an orienteering compass, learning to take and follow a compass bearing, explaining the features of an orienteering map, and determining walking and running pace. For the Geology merit badge instructors will be on hand to help Scouts complete requirements 1, 2, 3 and 4a. These involve defining what Geology is, identifying resources that can be extracted from the earth for commercial use, reviewing a geological map of the area and visiting with a geologist or someone in a related profession.

1:00-5:00 Sunday, August 7; Saturday, August 13, and Saturday August 20

IGIC will help Scouts meet selected requirements for the Geocaching and Surveying merit badges. Scouts will be able to work on requirement 4 of the Geocaching merit badge which involves explaining how a GPS works and demonstrating the use of a GPS unit. In addition to earning merit badge credit, Scout leaders and Scouts that are interested in supporting the recovery of Indiana’s control monuments will also learn how to become involved with that important and exciting program.

Daily 9:00am-9:00pm August 5 - August 21

IGIC will also be offering an Orienteering Activity on each day of the Fair that involves finding exciting surprises throughout the Fairgrounds. Scouts successfully completing this event will also earn partial credit toward their Orienteering merit badge, and be entered into a special prize drawing at the end of the fair. Stop by the IGIC tent in the Scout Legacy Camp to pick up your State Fair orienteering map!
