Town of Fisher’s GIS Coordinator Position

Position performs advanced skilled technical work providing a range of complex effort in the design, implementation, maintenance, and analysis of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in coordination with the Town’s overall GIS program. This includes but not limited to: database design and maintenance, managing the implementation of various projects pertaining to GIS and working closely with consultants; creating maps, applications, services, and graphics for presentations, reports and documents, as well as developing, maintaining and updating the town’s web based GIS; supervise projects utilizing staff from different departments who are capable of providing assistance and expertise.


  • Creates, maintains, updates databases, spatial layers, and attribute information
  • Conducts spatial analyses tasks related to GIS queries
  • Analyze, convert, or transfer data using GIS software
  • Develops customized GIS applications, implements scripts/models and implements mobile, desktop and web-based GIS products/solutions with other departments
  • Develops and reviews GIS documentation, user-training manuals/materials, quality control/procedural documentation, and land-related documents/legal descriptions
  • Assists with coordination with all Town departments to assure they have the relevant spatial data that is required
  • Assists with data sharing with other Municipalities and Public Sectors including County, State, and Federal agencies, as well as private sector data providers
  • Provides training on the use of GPS equipment; locates with GPS various Town facilities and infrastructure
  • Responds to requests for GIS information from public and Town staff
  • Performs quality control procedures on GIS and attribute information
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training seminars to remain current on principles and practices of GIS


  • Bachelor’s degree with coursework in Geographic Information Systems, Cartography, Computer Aided Design, Information Technology, or related field and considerable experience in GIS, CAD, Civil Engineering/Design, Community Development, Government, plus a minimum of 1-3 years relevant professional work experience.
  • Expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), ESRI ArcGIS 9.x or 10.x, both for desktop (ArcMap) and Server (ArcServer and ArcSDE) environments
  • Extensive knowledge of geospatial data from a wide array of sources
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise performing queries against databases (e.g. MS SQL and Access)
  • Experience with publishing GIS Services
  • Experience with use of various extensions for ESRI Arc Products (including but not limited to ArcGIS Network Analyst, Spatial Analyst, Tracking Analyst, and Workflow Manager)
  • Experience with geospatial web APIs and creating web mapping mash-ups is desirable
  • Experience with PHP, Flex/Flash, Python scripts, Java, Modelbuilder, and Xcode is desirable
  • Experience with data exchange between CAD and GIS formats
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Prefer candidates who hold or are pursuing GISP certification
  • Ability and willingness to multi-task and work on many different projects simultaneously in a team environment
  • Must be detail oriented, thorough, well organized, and effectively manage time
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
