Projects

In addition to the projects undertaken by specific committees, IGIC strives to further GIS in the state by working with partners in the public and private sectors. Below are a few of our current projects.

Statewide Orthophotography Program

Designed to maintain statewide aerial photography for Indiana, this is an ongoing program of new data acquisition projects. more…

Statewide Elevation Program

Not your mother’s elevation data – this is statewide, high resolution, and high accuracy. One of the basic framework layers, elevation data is available as DEMs and LiDAR. more…

Statewide Local-resolution National Hydrography Data (NHD) Development

Funded primarily by the Indiana Office of Community ande Rural Affairs (OCRA), and in-part by the US Geological Survey this project is developing a new hydrographic data model for the state. The existing High-Resolution NHD data originally produced at a scale of 1:24,000 is being replaced with new Local-Resolution NHD data produced at a scale of 1:2,400. more…

County Data Sharing Initiative

Awarded to IGIC by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), this project supports our ongoing statewide County Data Sharing Initiative. It allowed IGIC and its partners to further develop the processes and tools critical to the development of the IndianaMap, the portal for sharing local data. Activities included the development of data harvesting tools, QA/QC data testing and reporting, data replication and publishing to the IndianaMap, next generation data model design, and the documentation and sharing of best practices. more…

IndianaMap

This ongoing multi-phase project envisions a single, widely accessible digital map for Indiana. more…

Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) Hydrography Updates

What’s in a name? The difference between a creek and a ditch can make all the difference in the world when it comes to complying with federal codes, funding, and management. This project has improved the geographic name information in the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). The names listed in the NHD did not accurately reflect those in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the authoritative federal source for geographic names. This project has been an essential first step toward ultimately building more accurate and complete NHD data for Indiana.

Essential Facilities Data for the IndianaMap

The US Geological Survey is funding this project to add essential facility structures to the IndianaMap. The additions include fire stations, police stations, emergency operations centers, hospitals, medical care facilities, and schools. The data is currently part of FEMA’s HAZUS Multi-Hazard risk assessment tool, which is widely used to model and analyze potential losses from floods, hurricane winds, and earthquakes. This project will also develop, deploy and test the ability for local non-GIS First Responders to maintain this structure information through a web-based Google Maps interface.

IndianaMap Framework Data Plans

State code stipulates that IGIC make recommendations to the Indiana Geographic Information Officer on a statewide data integration plan. This is being accomplished by breaking the information into framework data layers, and evaluating plans for each layer. more…

Return on Investment Study

Through a Cooperative Agreements Program (CAP) grant from the Federal Geographic Data Committee, IGIC has produced a return on investment study for statewide GIS.  more…

IndianaMap for Economic Development

The IndianaMap package is an ideal tool to build thriving communities. IGIC is putting these digital map collections into the hands of the people striving to improve Indiana economies. more…

IndianaMap – In A Library Near You!

With funding from an AT&T Excelerator Grant, IGIC and the Indiana State Library put new county digital maps in at least one public library in every county in the state.  more…

Huck Finn

The Huck Finn project encourages kids’ involvement in the GIS through activities like Paint Your Schoolyard.

Tie Card Scanning Project

In a multi-jurisdictional effort, surveyor’s tie cards are being scanned and accessed electronically by surveyors around the state. more…

GPS for Kids

Working with the Geography Educators’ Network of Indiana, IGIC distributed GPS units, software, and aerial photography to 10 schools and youth groups across Indiana.

GIS Presenter Kits

Under the IndianaView Minigrant program, the IGIC Education & Outreach Committee developed a series of presentation materials to assist both experts and novices in conveying the benefits of GIS.
