The last time the IGIC Board and Membership met to update our Strategic Plan was in 2007. Our 2007 – 2009 Strategic Plan has served us well providing us with a well defined Mission, Vision and Goals to accomplish.
Our past goals included:
1. IGIC will work toward building the IndianaMap
2. IGIC’s corporate activities will be managed in a professional and accountable manner
3. IGIC will promote dissemination of data and data products
4. IGIC will nurture awareness and use of geographic information among the public and professionals through outreach and education
5. IGIC will develop and advise on standards and policy related to geographic information
6. IGIC will build partnerships that support and strengthen the Indiana GIS community
So how have we done?
In May 2007, Senate Bill 461 was passed by the Indiana legislature and signed by Governor Mitch Daniels, a major accomplishment for IGIC and the citizens of Indiana. Dubbed the IndianaMap legislation, the bill represented significant progress toward accomplishing the top IndianaMap priorities. IGIC has been actively working to implement the tasks and objectives outlined in the IndianaMap legislation.
Some of our major accomplishments include:
1. Participating on the selection committee to hire the State of Indiana's first ever Geographic Information Officer.
2. Leading strategic planning sessions with the GIS community.
3. Forming the IndianaMap Steering Committee and Framework Data Workgroups to develop the data standards, collection procedures, stewardship and data integration tools/methods to create a single statewide map.
4. Documenting the return on investment for IndianaMap framework data.
5. Providing GIS outreach, education and community-building through our annual statewide GIS conferences and dozens of GIS seminars, workshops and roadshows held across Indiana for hundreds of participants.
6. Through our igic.org and indianamap.org web sites and our IndianaMap partners at Indiana University-UITS and the Indiana Geological Survey we provide Internet access to nearly eighteen terabytes of geospatial data, generate over 300,000 maps, and have logged over a million visits to these on-line services.
7. Through project grants IGIC has consistently won grants to support the design and development of the IndianaMap.
8. Through our ongoing Data Sharing Initiative, we currently have 67 of 92 of Indiana Counties on-board to share their GIS Parcel Polygons, Point Addresses, Street Centerlines, and Jurisdictional Boundaries with the State and the IndianaMap over the Internet as OGC Web Feature Services.
So what do we do now?
Now it time to discuss and develop a new IGIC 2009 – 2011 Strategic Plan, and we need your ideas and help to do this! Many of our major goals will remain the same, and ongoing projects and initiatives will continue, but there are still many new details and new directions to discuss to flush out our strategic plan for the next 2 years.
To accomplish this, we will meet from 9 am to 12 pm on June 18th at the Indiana State Library, History Reference Room, 140 N. Senate Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46204. This is an open meeting and anyone is welcome to attend!
In addition to the Strategic Plan Update session we also have scheduled a Legislative Advocacy Training session followed by our June Board Meeting.
As part of our Legislative Advocacy Training session we are very pleased to have Senator Beverly Gard, District 28, Greenfield agree to come talk to us about “ How to talk to your Legislator”.
