Open and effective government is continually looking for better ways to communicate. Our citizens’ schedules do not always match our own. It’s after hours and a new resident wants to find out his trash day or who her city council member is and their email address. Or, maybe someone is researching a new neighborhood and does not want to look in several places to find the information they need. Do they even know who to contact? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a simple tool to get all this kind of information in one place?
The City of Bloomington already had an online Interactive GIS map and a map gallery available for citizens to visualize and search some GIS data. But, we thought that we could create something simpler that provided a portal to even more information via the web. The City developed myBloomington, a local address search application (http://bloomington.in.gov/mybloomington). Enter an address and myBloomington provides:
myBloomington utilizes information residing in the City’s GIS and Master Address Database. The address search is flexible, allowing entry of minimal amount of data to conduct the search. Search tips and contact information is provided for when an address cannot be found.
myBloomington takes GIS and related data and delivers it in an easy to use form. Users do not need to call or visit City or other government offices to find the information available here. myBloomington is not just for the public. Internal users find it a convenient way to access information about an address such as determining if it is within the City limits. Feedback from users has helped to identify potential problem addresses and street names.
