NG9-1-1 Through the Lens of a GIS Professional

The 9-1-1 system – one that is life-critical to all citizens – has remained essentially the same over the last 50 years, but our means of communication have evolved significantly. Today, more people in the U.S. are reliant on mobile devices as a main source of communication, both for verbal and non-verbal communication (i.e. texting or instant messaging). The 9-1-1 system is in the midst of a complete overhaul to next-generation 9-1-1. In this shift, geographic information systems (GIS) will become a backbone of the infrastructure needed for location identification and call routing to public safety answering points (PSAPs).
